Liquid or vapor phase?

Cryogenic storage in liquid phase:

  • Very low temperature (-196°C)
  • More difficult and dangerous rack/samples removal
  • Havier due to liquid phase
  • Slower drain time due to liquid phase
  • Grater risk of “splashing”
  • Risk of bursting for improperly sealed vials
  • Cross contamination risk
Cryogenic storage in vapor phase:
  • The tank and the samples are cooled by the vapor of the liquid nitrogen
  • The samples are placed on a platform above a reservoir of liquid nitrogen
  • Lighter due to vapor phase
  • No risk of “splashing”
  • No risk of Cross contamination
